The great divide

Was having an interesting chat back and forth on Facebook about gun controll that turned a bit broad.  I figured it would be an interesting read here:

Christopher Apostolof voted ‘no’ in the poll! What’s your opinion?

Christopher voted in the take your gun away Poll along with over 16,386 other people.

would you support a nationwide handgun ban?
- yes

All kidding aside, I don’t think it’s that rare. If you support the constitution, and you support the bill of rights, then you can’t just support the 1st and 4th.

Republicans forgot the actual meaning of “strict constructionist” when they decided to toss out the bill of rights. Not only do you have the right to own a gun, but you have the right to freedom of speech and the right to a free press.

The key to my “liberal nature” lies in my belief in amendments 4 through 10.

As I said, if you want “strict construction” then you can’t just believe in your right to choose what you believe, but you must defend those choices that are made that you find abhorrent.

The inherent nature of the republic demands that those minority voices be protected, and is the reason the founding fathers chose representative democracy rather than majority rule.

A most eloquent defense, my friend…and mostly correct.
Republicans feel that the Bill of Rights do not apply to Islamic nutcases that want to kill us…
The Bill of Rights does specifically state a “Right” to keep and bear arms. It does not, however say anything about a right to an abortion, a job, healthcare & etc.

I would argue only this. Freedom means nothing until it’s truly tested. We forget dark periods in our history such as Manzanar and our internment of Japanese US citizens. When it becomes acceptable to throw out such things as habeas corpus, we have issues well beyond simple politics.

It is fashionable to say “never again”, I see a different path forming.

In the words of a strict constructionist… They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

The biggest usurper of our rights is in the White House as we speak. Remember your Orwell…Four legs good, two legs better”

To take a single step beyond the boundaries thus specifically drawn around the powers of Congress, is to take possession of a boundless field of power, no longer susceptible of any definition.” –Thomas Jefferson

The divide between “conservative” and “liberal” is narrow at best on most issues.

The biggest issue however is that of legislation via a mandate from God. If done by a Mullah, we call it extremism, if done by SarahPAC, it’s called “family values”. The inconsistency built into the party, and the quest for denial of basic rights is a gap I can never bridge.
